Let’s face it, the majority of folks have really no real knowledge of what a bear dog is. As I am the only breeder of the Original bear dogs, the Jamthund, or as some know them, the Swedish Elkhound not many in North America have even seen one.
What is a bear dog?
Posso, the big male shown, born in Finland is the original bear dog, his breed is renowned for this work.
For centuries these dogs have served the woodsman the entire time in amongst some of the highest density bear regions in the world. What they originally were for was to protect and help the woodsman move through and live, stay in remote terrain, among the bears.
That was the entire hundreds and hundreds of years of history. The Moose were a primary food source and the bear were the primary constant in contact. So these dogs became extremely skilled at hunting Moose and handling bear. You can all imagine in the old days you shoot a Moose you have to skin it, carry it out, making camps along the way, bears all over of course, blood, guts hide, all the meat, you know exactly what brings a bear in.
Doesn’t take anyone long to realize that the dog is going to be doing dual purpose in light speed. Finding a Moose to supply winter food supply, then keeping the bears from coming into camp to steal it.
This instinctive skill is what makes these dogs so valuable today in hiking and remote terrain work. We all know that the more fires in a region, the more concentrated the bears. In fact the more concentrated all wildlife becomes, in the regions that were not burnt. The game has to move and concentrate. No science to figure that out.
Where it becomes important for individuals who are going to regions now, and we are all going to be going to these regions more and more with the world situations, well, encounters go up.
Study our dogs, watch our videos, gain and understanding of Instinctive skill versus some perceived ability. These are thousands of years of breeding and use in this exact environment. Going to remote terrain requires this dog. There is no other dog breed as qualified, as focused as instinctive as this breed for what we are needing.
