The sturdy rugged dog of the Vikings, the Elkhound do not require boots and coats when they venture out! I have a photo of two of my foundation females, rugged warriors of the winter landscape, Kalia and Kamp. They are of course Grandmothers to the soon to be and already famous Aurora and Isla ( Kalia) and Varja and Tiera ( Kamp) all which are in our breeding program.
Rugged Winter Hiking Dogs
Viking Warriors, Kalia and Kamp, Grandmothers to Aurora and Varja, foundation female Norwegian Elkhounds
As we speak Aurora is training in the Desna program at Michaels, believe me she is entirely capable of handling the Northern Alberta winter in her natural attire.
Varja is up there as well, she is nursing a brand new Rock Star male named Odin. He is going to a long time Elkhound owner and of course, Varja can handle the weather just fine.
Double coat dogs have an intensely warm inner coat, it’s so insulating that it can be snowing very heaving and the snow will not melt off the back of the dogs. I have seen them lay down while I have my break on the trails and the snow pile up and not melt at all.
There is a very rugged outer guard coat that repels water and mud, keeping that inner guard coat clean and protected. The working coats are tight on the outer guard hairs.
The feet develop into tough pads with tufts of fur between, on them the web between the toes is strong, acts like a snowshoe of sorts in the deep powder. Blood flow to the feet is high with a constant stream of steady flow to keep the warmth to the extremities.
If you are planning winter activities in the northern regions, Elkhounds are your best choice with the history of use in rugged conditions going back centuries.
You might need a coat and boots, but believe me, your new Kamia Kennels pup will not haha! Enjoy all seasons! Enjoy the video of ARCO, Isla, Aurora and Runa all out doing Desna training up at Michael and Sarah’s in Northern Alberta. Total Rock Stars!
