Centuries of hiking with the handler in rugged and rough terrain has created the Norwegian Elkhound, the Ultimate hiking dogs. They are one of the oldest known breeds that have been bred specifically to work with the handler in remote conditions and terrain.

This ability to work with the handler has been focused on very few things, hunting and hiking. They excel at both. The ability of the dog to understand the geography around them, know the whereabouts of game through air scent and the direct energy connection to the handler contribute to making this dog exceptional in off leash situations.

Working with the pups at early stages using mentor dogs, who are exceptional already, to wake up the historical instinctive skill in the pup to bond and focus on the handler is one of the keys to making a good dog and exceptional dog.

Kamia Kennels over the last few decades has become North America’s leading Elkhound breeder and the pups abilities and instinctive skill is bred into them, retained in them and devoted effort is placed with the pups to awaken this instinct.

We have contributed a great deal of intel on our breeding program, our Desna training program and now we have a brand new contribution to the development and preservation of the Elkhounds and the Kamia Kennels preservation breeding ideals.
