There really is no greater winter hiking dog than an Elkhound. As the oldest known breed raised exclusively in winter climates this dog excels.
Vista's, Fresh Air, Great Norwegian Elkhound
You just can't beat hiking in winter to the high country with a Norwegian Elkhound
Health and wellness is paramount these days. The ability to get out into the outdoors and off the beaten path allows for stimulation of the immune system, but also stimulation for the mind. It gives you a recharge. There is literally nothing like having a great day doing a high elevation hike with an Elkhound. Norwegian Elkhounds are the very best snow and high country dogs.
They have been raised in the high regions of Norway, Sweden and Finland, up to Siberia and the country and elevations in many of these areas is very similar to British Columbia.
I totally enjoy taking my pack, snowshoes and 1 to many great dogs and hiking up where I can have lunch with a great vista. My mind clears, I feel good, it’s amazing.
Sometimes I wonder how lucky we are to live is such a great region and country with this incredible adventure awaiting each time we wish to go. All that is required is simple elements, good hiking pants and coat, small pack with the essentials and a great Norwegian Elkhound. That is all. Nothing fancy, some snowshoes if it’s deep and your set.
By all means check out my videos on Norwegian Elkhounds Hiking and visit our site. We are fortunate to have some great pups on the ground now and it is a perfect time to get a companion for the winter.
My favorite time to get a new pup has always been the winter, you can train them for off leash better in the winter than any other time. When you are feeling a bit overwhelmed with the chaos, its time my friend, get a great dog and head for the hills!
