Norwegian Elkhound pups, Jamthund / Swedish Elkhound pups and Fullblood pups all go through our Desna training program.
The Desna training program is unique in the Elkhound world and it’s actually very unique for all breeds as few if any offer the level of training and advanced off leash pup development as the Desna program.
The instinctive nature of the Elkhound pup is different in each lineage, sure they all have some of the same instincts, but the handler focused lineage found literally only at Kamia Kennels in our lines make the best off leash hiking dogs.
In order to focus and wake up this instinct and begin proper development for the pup to become a total Rock Star off leash remote terrain dog this requires some very unique training to instill the behavior early in development. Mentor dogs are always used and are in essence a great deal of the training program.
Without quality mentor dogs, both male and female, modeling is not visible to the pup, he has to learn without a model, this is incredibly difficult to teach in remote terrain without a model dog.
Having a model dog is as rare as hen’s teeth, you don’t just come across model dogs. They are raised, mentored by earlier mentor dogs, fostered and developed. Not all Elkhounds are model dogs. Take a great deal of skill, ability, they are absolute masterpiece in responsive behavior and hiking skills themselves, this is required so as to give only the absolute best response modeling to the pups.
Our Desna program is almost exclusively run by Michael and Sarah now as they have the model dogs needed, they do the whelping and have the location. A suitable location of course near immediate remote terrain that you can work the pup has to be there.
Michael and Sarah are excellent with Elkhounds the energy matches, pups get this feedback, they see the interaction with the model dogs and pack, they respond to this.
I will share a video of some Desna trained pups from the Teeko and Karia litter. These are incredible young working Elkhounds out in remote terrain, functioning like big dogs. You can take these pups home and begin hiking and working remote terrain the very day you arrive, they are set with this behavior now for life. These skills do not leave, they simply get better and better. It’s in the dog, it’s instincts, instinctive behavior now functioning. This is the absolute best way to have a dog trained. Train to instinct. I have talked about this for decades.
