Off leash training for most people is one of the most daunting tasks in pup and dog training. Let’s face it, if you take a pup to the mountains and it’s not skilled in off leash, things can go wrong. My number one piece of advice is to start with a pup that has off leash instinctive ability. It’s miraculous how fast an instinctive pup that is bred to work off leash learns compared to almost any other dog. The Kamia Kennels Elkhounds are the worlds best off leash pups because they have been bred for centuries to do exactly this.

Off Leash Pup Training Tips
Some tips.
- Start with an instinctive pup to begin with
- Use a trained mentor dog if possible
- Have the pup “started” by the breeder
- Don’t train on trails, stay completely off trails and timber only
- 20 minutes moving slowly – 20 minutes sitting letting the pup hang out
I have trained many pups over the last few decades and I normally use a mentor dog, Kamia Kennels has the very best mentor dogs. Mentor dogs allow the pup to learn at light speed. My key aspect is I never train on trails. Only in forests and timber where the dog does not get the idea to just continue down a trail, he has to remain focused on me. I only move slowly, encouraging him to come along, but don’t overdo the commands, just basically move through the forest. Then every 20 minutes stop and sit down, let the pup just hang out. He will hang with you. Then, move again. No treats ever. Remember, I never train with treats, only good praise. My videos have tons of details on each aspect you can find them on my video Channel here: Norwegian Elkhound Off Leash Videos
Bjorn was a Pretty Boy Leif and Luna pup, one of the most instinctive lineages and he was a Rock Star pup. Here he is shown with me up hiking the mountains like a Pro at a very young age. We have pups just like him now. Contact us if you wish for an instinct rich Norwegian Elkhound pup.
