Oh it’s a glorious time in the fall with the Elkhounds as they begin to sense the hunt season approaches! They are magnificent in the ability to assist in the success and one of the key aspects of course is scouting the ranges ahead of time.
Scouting with the Elkhounds!
A great Norwegian Elkhound can assist in success of the hunt by working with you to scout the regions ahead of time!
Norwegian Elkhounds are great hunters, they like the Swedish Elkhound can air scent great distance and can pick up on the whereabouts of game they are focused in on so much better than we can.
When scouting it really makes it so much better with the dog, or dogs as you would be walking right by game that was in cover. How many times have we walked right by game without a dog, only to hear it moving off through the bush behind us and gone. We did not know it was there. The only reason we know was because it moved.
However, with the dogs scouting is way more productive, you are not going to miss anything as they know where it all is.
It really assists on opening day if you have an idea what has been around the areas you wish to hunt in, what has been identified by your scouting and what the patterns of movement are. Scouting with the dogs is incredible.
My lineages are some of the best for scouting and hunting as they are bred to work with the handler, so I can walk through the range with a group of them in total control yet they are still loose and able to scout. They range out to find scents, once they pick up on one, we can explore as they indicate where they are heading and it’s inevitable we go right to the game.
Literally in a day’s work, early morning hiking till early afternoon I can cover a great deal of terrain and find all the game that is in that region. Over the course of a few weekends a person could cover quite a few great potential areas with dogs and have valuable insight as to what is there.
I know a lot of hunters that don’t scout with a dog, it’s a sure bet that scouting with a dog can be many times more productive, you can cruise way faster, cover way more ground. The dogs are alert, focused they can motor. We have far greater advantages to finding what is there over a man by himself.
How many times have you heard of hunters coming home empty handed. Tons right. Scouting a region before hand to learn about the area, what is there, what’s passing through even, what topography, sight lines, areas for flushing out the game, all these can be learned ahead of time with scouting. Having the dog do the bulk of the work he was bred for makes the odds of success much higher.
If I am not mistaken, in Europe, like say, Finland or Sweden and Norway, I do believe they still require a dog to be registered on the hunt party, at least one. They know the importance of the dog there. Scouting of course is huge as the harvesting of Moose is a great aspect of the culture in those regions.
North American’s can scout with a dog through entire regions and have an incredible outing at the same time. It’s sometimes going to be the difference in going home with fat roasts and steaks, or track soup!
Talk to us about our Elkhounds, I will share some photos of some of the Elite Elkhound females of North America, in fact they are some of the elite in the world, out with me scouting. Truly an awesome fall day we had.
