Genetic preservation of Elkhounds in both instinctive preservation and also genetic preservation begins with saving genetics in either a male pup or a female pup. Both work to preserve if they can pass instincts down. Every one of the Kamia Elkhounds can pass instincts and of course the genetics pass with the litter progeny.

What is spectacular is when you are able to preserve from both the male side with a male pup retained and from the female side as well, such as in a matched pair of siblings retained.

In our case coming up this summer we are going to witness the ultimate genetic preservation using extreme diverse genetic pairings of two litters, one from Merle and one from Silver Nessa.

Merle and Silver Nessa are full siblings from an April 16th 2019 litter. They have been living at different locations but are going to reconvene at Michael and Sarah’s this summer for two incredible litters.

Merle will be mating with Varja, a stunning daughter of Tekla and Karu. We are going to witness the most diverse bloodlines as we have the ancient Tekla back ground, we also carry forward with the imported Finnish blood of Karu, this is matched with the ancient Norrland blood of Merle’s dad Jaegar and his imported outcross mother The Beautiful Silver Nova.

Silver Nessa will be paired with Karu, so as to achieve the greatest possible diverse combination for this preservation of genetics and Instincts.

By having both the male side and the female side we get maximum preservation of all material, instincts and behaviors. Male and Female siblings bring almost identical aspects but there is just ever so slight a difference in what each side preserves. So it’s paramount in true preservation to have both sides, which Kamia Kennels is the only breeder to do this.

This is intense preservation of Elkhound genetics. This particular scenario has been planned out for decades, over 4 generations of our Elkhounds are utilized in this preservation. Imported dogs from multiple countries to accomplish this so as to have extreme genetic diversity. The sheer background of excellence in these combinations is incredible.

20 years in our program alone to put these pups on the ground this summer from Merle and Varja and Silver Nessa and Karu. Incredible to see it all coming together.

John Feeney has Merle down in IL and will bring him up when Varja is cycling. Tammy and Chris have Silver Nessa in Idaho and she will be traveling up fairly soon so she can be at Michael and Sarah’s when she cycles.

Karu is here with me and we will be working to either have Karu travel before hand to Michael’s or at the same trip when Michael meets Tammy and Chris in Southern Alberta for Nessa. There is a ton of traveling and organizing to get all the dogs in one location and then of course have successful matings and then manage the females to whelp, and through to weaning, then onto Desna and training with the pups. Final selections of ongoing preservation stock will be done in the later stage of Desna.

If we are successful in placing of matched siblings from each litter we will be looking forward to a set of matched sisters from the Silver Nessa litter going to a great home that will keep them intact. We also will be looking to find homes for the matched pair of males from the Merle and Varja litter.

This is an excellent time for folks who value the Elkhound preservation work, want an excellent pair of Elkhound matched siblings and would love to work with us to step forward. We would be asking that they remain intact for a number of years till we get a litter of preservation pups from them. Think about assisting us if you are planning to get some matched Elkhounds from us, as this is going to be incredible pups and a fabulous opportunity to assist the preservation work.

One thing we know beyond a shadow of a doubt having had the Karu and Silver Nessa litter already is that the combination of Jaegar and Silver Nova mixed with Karu is one of the very best combinations. Incredible stout dogs with tons of character and power, very dominant and confident males and ultra sharp beautiful females. So we are absolutely thrilled to be able to see the combination of this genetic match again.

We also have seen many times some of our absolute best dogs come from the old Takoda line matched with Tekla. By having Takoda’s son Jaegar as the father of Merle, we get that bloodline combination and match that with the stunning beauty of Silver Nova, then that beauty combines in with the Karu/Tekla daughter Varja, who is phenomenal. These two litters have such incredible backgrounds it’s literally crazy how good they are. Literally mirrors of each other two pretty much so wow, talk about preservation.

As you can tell I am very excited.
