One of the best times to hike with the Norwegian and Swedish Elkhounds is in the fall. The weather has cooled, the air is crisp and the dogs truly enjoy this time of year. You can move around easily as the snow has not came and the sharp cold winds are not blowing in yet. Beautiful scenery abounds, the scents of the fall berries are sharp and you can really feel the excitement in the air. Bears are fat, the Moose calves are big, Turkeys are in full color and look fantastic.
Fall Hiking With Norwegian Elkhounds
Fall is my favorite time of year to hike with the Norwegian and Swedish Elkhounds
Norwegian Elkhound and Swedish Elkhounds come alive in the fall too, they instinctively know soon they can hunt and they are anxious to begin but know we wait just a little yet. We need the rut to finish and the temps to cool just a bit more. In the final days of fall the high mountain grasses firm up, the grazing animals can now pack on the weight, Elk and deer fatten up quickly on the firmer grass.
The coats of the Norwegian Elkhounds as well as the Jamthund blow out the final bits of the summer coat as the winter coats come in. They have glorious coats at this time of year, a small bit of brushing and it’s easy to remove any tufts that might still remain. Feed lots of frozen fish and fat at this time of year, the coats require just a bit more oil in them now while they grow out the winter coat.
