Late summer and early fall are great times to hike the backcountry with your Elkhounds. Norwegian and Swedish Elkhounds are the ultimate hiking dog having been selectively bred for this work for centuries. The higher elevations allow you to get to some cooler temps, perhaps some early snow and the dogs love it. Instincts are running full tilt in hunting Elkhounds in this season and game is fat and rich. Bears smell, Moose are easy for the dogs to scent, it’s a very alive time in the remote regions with your dogs. Give your Norwegian a chance to get on a ridge, the updrafts will be coming toward them, so fun to watch them. Fall hikes are wonderful memories. I have a photo of one such memory for you, it’s from years gone by but some of my best old world warriors, Takoda, Tora, GAEDA and Mia. We were back in the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, way back in. Deep forest, no one for miles and miles. Great Day! Great Memories! I still run direct descendants of all these 4 warriors today, generations later they are still the same. Contact us if you wish anytime to inquire about pups from these magnificent lineages.
